This painting is of Jamie who was paralyzed by polio from his chest down. One day, when the teacher left the classroom, Jamie began goofing around in a regular desk chair while trying to catch a paper plane. All of a sudden, his right leg fell off of the seat while the left leg remained on the seat. The momentum swung the left leg in back of him so much that the latch of his braces locked the leg straight at the knee. This brought his pelvic band forward causing his upper body to fall down. He broke his fall to the floor with his hands. Jamie's braces went up to his pelvis with the pelvic band. If you don't know anything about braces, the pelvic band swung his leg causing pressure on his lower back and preventing him from sitting back up in his seat. So, Jamie had to unlock his braces with the leg in back of him to bring the leg forward and up using his hand. At least, now, the pelvic band was not resting on his back. He released his leg so that now he could push on the desk top and try and sit up. But, after a few seconds in pushing his upper body up, the same paralyzed leg fell and again flung in back of him with his braces locking his leg straight at the knee. Again, the pelvic band pushed him forward with his hands catching him and with his other leg still on the desk chair. He tried several attempts all resulting in the same way. Everybody was laughing at his awkward predicament, including Jamie. He was trying to get up before our teacher returned from taking another kid to the principal's office. But how could he sit up with his leg and pelvic band rocking like a seesaw? He suddenly got an idea! He used his other hand to push on the desk top and then rose cautiously. By putting the troublesome left leg on the seat, his limber and paralyzed back folded. Now, Jamie could straighten out his arched back. Just in the knick of time before the teacher walked in the door, Jamie was able to unlock his braces at the knee and yanked his useless leg forward and up with his hand. |
